History

The first Manitoba Book Award, sponsored by McNally Robinson, was presented at the Manitoba Writers’ Guild’s annual general meeting held in 1989, for Recent Mistakes by Jan Horner (Turnstone Press, published in 1988).

Over the years, more awards were added, and more sponsors came on board. Today, the Manitoba Book Awards are produced by the Manitoba Writers’ Guild, with the assistance of the Association of Manitoba Book Publishers. The awards consist of 15 separate categories, and include six bilingual awards and one French-only prize.

The awards honor books written by Manitobans, published in Manitoba, or about Manitoba.
